The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) successfully hosted the Aviation Week Netball gala on Wednesday, December 10, at Fresh Handling grounds to celebrate the annual International Aviation Week.
The UCAA Management netball team edged out the UCAA Operations netball team in the finals to become champions of this year’s edition, winning a trophy, gold medals and a he-goat. The event also featured players from Avipol netball team, and 7 Eagles netball teams among others.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vianney Luggya, the UCAA’s Manager for Public Affairs noted that several sporting events have been held as part of the Aviation Week celebrations.
“Before this netball event, we had a basketball tournament on Saturday, November 29, at the CCCC basketball court. Before that, we also had the Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Championship in Kampala in memory of our former director of airports, the late Sir Rwabushenyi, who was also a founder member of the Uganda Chess Federation,” he said.
The UCAA spokesperson further added that just a few days back, they also had a Seniors golf tournament that was concluded at the Golf club in Kampala- still as part of the Aviation Week celebrations. “And they shall crown the celebrations next week, on Tuesday, with the stakeholders’ engagement breakfast at Imperial Royal Hotel,” he stated.
“We are taking sports as the major activity in the celebrations, because we know that sporting teams are part of the frequent users of our facilities, but also members of the community in which we operate. We want to participate with them in these sporting events, which are good for wellness, physical fitness and also bring us further together,” Luggya expressed.

The Public Affairs manager also highlighted that sports are part of UCAA’s corporate social responsibility objective of giving back to the communities in which they operate, hence the authority is glad and privileged to host such events.
The Aviation Week is celebrated globally every first week of December, commemorating the signing of the Chicago Convention of 1944, a historic agreement that established ICAO and shaped modern international aviation. Since its first celebration in 1994, the week has become a tradition among ICAO member states, including Uganda.
