In the ongoing quality assurance operations that kicked off on Monday 18th. November, in Kampala district, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), is putting emphasis on registration and licensing of tourism accommodation as per section 34 of the Uganda Tourism Act No.2 for 2008.
Samora Ssemakula, in charge of quality assurance at UTB, noted that although compliance to the Act is still low, to tune of about 70%, lacking operational licenses, they are opportunistic that with continuous engagement those in this business will appreciate and abide by the set laws and standards.
The Community Liaison Officer Kampala Metropolitan Donald Muhwezi, explained that these aren’t meant to kick people out of the business, but rather guide them on how they can best carry in fragile business that directly touches people’s health and security.
“People who come to this country want must know, which hotels comply with the standards, and this is good for business owners, the country and also gives value to the client’s money” Muhwezi
The General Manager Emin Pasha Hotel and Spa, Edward Olumola, one of those that was found compliant, explained that it’s important that the tourism destinations are standardized in order to compete favorably on the international market.
To those that were found in bad shape they were given between 24 – 48 hours to relocate their visitors to other better and licensed facilities, as they organize themselves.
The Uganda Tourism Registration and Licensing of Tourism Accommodation Regulations 2014 categorizes tourism accommodation as; Caravan or Camping park, Cottage or Villa, Homestead, Eco Lodge, Guest house, Hostel, Hotel, Lodge, Motel, Safari or Tented camp, Farm house and Serviced apartments.
