Following high profiled meeting today Wednesday 21st . August that sat at the Prime Minister’s office, and chaired by the 1st Deputy Prime Minister of and Minister for East African Community Affairs Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, it has been resolved that waste trucks stop dumping waste in Nkumba and instead use land secured at Menvu in Nansana.
The meeting was caused by the Minister for Local Governments Hon. Raphael Magyezi on the president’s directive to find alternative solutions for waste management in Kampala and Greater Kampala metropolitan following the recent disaster at the Kitezi waste dumping site.
The discussions also looked at medium, and long-term interventions for waste management, and Government plans to acquire waste recycling equipment for KCCA and other cities at regional level.
The short term interventions, to solve the now standing problem included;
Redirecting waste from Nkumba to Menvu in Nansana, on land owned by Kira Municipal Council, with a Memorandum Of Understanding being prepared for temporary management.
Relocating residents from Kiteezi to Dundu and preparing Kiteezi for proper waste recycling.
Establishing transfer stations and procuring waste equipment urgently to support Kampala and other cities.
Nkumba dumping site is stay closed for waste reception for the next two days, with Mukono Katikolo serving as an alternative for a week while Menvu is being prepared.
The Minister for Works and Transport Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala has pledged to grade the dumping site in Nkumba and also work on the roads leading to both Menvu and Nkumba dumping sites.
The meeting was also attended by representatives from representatives from Kampala City Council Authority, Katabi towncounncil, Kira, Makindye Ssabagabo, Mukono, and Nansana Municipality and technical persons from the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The Mayor of Entebbe Fabrice Rulinda has said on re-opening Nkumba dumping site only registered waste trucks with official stickers from Entebbe Municipality will be allowed to access and use the dumping site.
