Tenants Flee Village Over Stinking Garbage.
Landlords in Nkumba – Bukolwa village, Katabi Town Council – Wakiso district are agonized after their tenants vacated their rentals over unbearable stinking garbage from Nkumba Dumpsite. The landlords say they have on several occasions voiced their concerns to Entebbe Municipal Council authorities in vain.
Locals say the Nkumba dumpsite got full months ago, due to the diversion of all garbage from Kampala to Nkumba following the Kiteezi incident. Although garbage trucks from Kampala were officially stopped from using this dumpsite, some are still sneaking in to dump their waste.
Katabi Town council leadership, where this dumpsite is located made an official letter, signed by the town council’s clerk Jude Muganga, to National Environment Authority (NEMA), highlighting environment, and health concerns, that have even affected businesses in the locality, asking them to intervene.
In a press release petition by NEMA to Entebbe Municipality on 11th. December.2024 and signed by the Authority’s Executive Director, Dr. Akankwasa Barirega, it was established that Entebbe Municipality didn’t not comply to the environmental assessment guidelines as per the Environment and Social Impact Assessment certificate given to them on 24th.January 2021. Entebbe Municipality was therefore given 3 months effective 11th November.2024 to among other directive; stop dumping waste and any other activity in the nearby wetland, restore the degraded ecosystem, establish a gas collection system and construct a secure perimeter wall around the dumpsite.
Nkumba dumpsite sits on a 14acres piece of land, however it’s alleged that these have been encroached on, rendering the nearby wetland as an alternative to waste dumping. Plans to re-open its boundaries are underway, according to Entebbe Mayor Fabrice Rulinda.
