EJA President Diana Kibuuka briefs pupils and teachers before the cleanup activity
Tagged a “Valentine’s Day Cleanup”, in Nkumba Bwaise village, Entebbe Journalists under their umbrella Entebbe Journalists Association (EJA), were joined by Katabi town council leadership, schools, and some community members to carry out a cleanup.
Themed “Love Your Planet”, the 4 hours’ cleanup stretched from S&S supermarket to Bwaise trading centre and this involved picking plastics and polythene which were the major waste plus sweeping and slashing.
Entebbe Journalist Association President Diana Kibuuka explained that they decided to organize this cleanup because as citizen journalists, it’s also their responsibility to advocate for a clean, tidy environment as well as a call-for-action to all the leaders, stakeholders and residents to sleeve-up and commit themselves to a healthy environment.
“We have selected Nkumba as a parish that has suffered the wrath of a polluted dirty environment, since it harbours the only dump-site that has been accommodating all garbage from Entebbe, Katabi, Kajjansi, Makindye and Kampala city since the Kiteezi tragedy. The area has stomached garbage and effluent that continues to find its way into Lake Victoria” she added.

EJA plans to organize more of such cleanups and they call upon stakeholders to join in this movement of taking up responsibility and ensuring a clean and safe environment for a healthier livelihood. They appeal to responsible government agencies to respond with urgency, to the looming environmental catastrophe in such a volatile area.
The Mayor of Katabi Town council Ronald Kalema Basamulekere, lauded EJA for the cleanup initiative and pledged to continue supporting in similar initiatives that promote community wellbeing.
