While officiating on the climax of Terehe sita celebrations as organised by the Special Forces Command (SFC) and Air Force, Maj Gen. James Birungi the SFC commander, implored Ugandans to concentrate on work that can economically transform the country. The SFC boss who expressed pride in the peace ushered in by the National Resistance Army (NRA), also noted that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has created peace in the region including countries like Rwanda, DRC, South Sudan, Central African Republic and Somalia. “Even where we have not participated physically, we have given our moral support, advice and mediation,” noted Maj. Gen. Birungi.

The SFC commander also remarked that such success stories come from the patriotic conviction of the NRA heroes who fought without pay, neither clothing nor shelter, but rather with heroic and positive attitude which has led to UPDF’s existence and many of its achievements. “I salute those who are present and those who did not manage to make it,” Maj. Gen. Birungi added.

Organised by SFC and Air Force command, the Terehe sita celebrations that were climaxed on Wednesday in Entebbe, had been launched on February 05, with social-community activities like cleaning, blood donation and sports activities. At the peak of the celebrations, soldiers matched from the Children’s park, through Entebbe town to the Air force base. In his speech, Brig. Gen. Katsigazi Tumusiime the Air force deputy commander said, Terehe sita reminds of Uganda’s history, where the country was about to be named a failed state. “We’re now being called upon to export peace, in and outside Africa,” prided Brig. Gen. Katsigazi.

The Air force deputy commander also noted that, those are efforts of President Museven, army leaders and the blood shed by all those who paid the highest price of death. “It will therefore be a betrayal if we fail to carry on the struggle,” urged Brig. Gen. Katsigazi adding that, it is not enough to just celebrate Terehe sita, but plant more seeds of peace and economic transformation.

Richard Sekyondo the Entebbe municipality deputy mayor prayed for discipline enforcement towards some army officers who brutalise their juniors on personal grounds. On the other hand, Stephen Kabuye the municipality former mayor called upon the army leadership to continue enhancing and transcending the idea of having a pro people force, one that aspires to keep peace and security for Uganda.

Meanwhile, Rose Tumusiime the Entebbe municipality member of parliament (MP) implored the army leadership to apportion some of the allocated funds, towards welfare and skills-development for soldiers’ spouses. Under a theme, Consolidating the UPDF strategic partnership with the people to guard the gains of liberation, the joint celebrations were also joined by soldiers from the Local Defence Unit (LDU), Police, students, religious and political leaders among others.
