UWEC’s hand-raised Camel turns 10years

Jenny the female camel is a success story of one of the hand-raised animals at Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Center (UWEC) also known as Entebbe Zoo. Born on April, 28, 2010, Jenny lost her mum on 3rd day of its life before UWEC started raising the young one. Being one of their mandates of rehabilitating animals, the animal sanctuary took full control to see Jenny grow into an adult camel she is now.

Ojara with Jenny at Entebbe Zoo

Robert Ojara, the Camel’s immediate care-taker, proudly talks of Jenny as a strong and jolly animal who has fought for her life. “She started feeding independently as an orphan on her 3rd day, and couldn’t identify which plants to feed on, and those that were prohibited,” narrates Ojara, adding that, it became his solemn purpose at the centre, to identify what kind of plant-leaves Jenny loved most. “I always felt pity for the young camel and always held her in prayer,” recounts the animal keeper.

Jenny has since, chosen a companion named Masuzuki- a male Camel, both of which animals, are under direct care of Ojara, and continue to thrive under a serene and semi-wild environment at UWEC.

Jenny has since got a male companion at the sanctuary, named Masuzuki
