Dr. Rein Zeeman, the plastic/reconstructive surgeon and president of Interplast Holland who established the Burns Unit in Mulago hospital died on Monday evening from his home in the Netherlands. Dr. Zeeman a Dutch resident, was pivotal in the construction of Kiruddu hospital, and has trained all the plastic surgeons in Uganda among others in East Africa.
Prior his death, Dr. Zeeman had just renewed a three-year contract with Uganda’s government, to continue operating people and train medics at Kiruddu hospital where he was so much based. According to Dr. Charles Kabugo the hospital director, Dr. Zeeman was a very hard-working teacher and great surgeon. “We shall miss him a lot because we had great plans for the burns and plastic unit,” eulogised Dr. Kabugo.
Ambassador Mirjam Blaak Sow who is the Ambassador of Uganda to the BENELUX countries and the European Union intimated that Dr. Zeeman preferred that people just celebrate his death, than mourn. “He asked that mourners pop drinks and have all the fun talk, they so wish, than wailing and sobbing,” revealed Amb. Blaak.
Dr. Edris Kalanzi the head of burns and plastic surgery department at Kiruddu hospital described Zeeman’s death as a big blow for all medics and Ugandans. “He has been training all medics from Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, South Africa among other countries. His death leaves behind only three reconstructive surgeons in Uganda,” confided Dr. Kalanzi.
