The Criminal Investigations department (CID) has arrested five members of a cross district criminal outfit allegedly led by three senior officers.
Following the creation of a special team to track the activities of the Police officers and few cases of highway robbery reported in Nyanzi Swamp, Nakibanga in Mityana District.
In the previous months maimed bodies have been ditched and retrieved from the swamp.
It is alleged that the gang has been trailing unsuspecting businessmen traveling within Mityana in the night and robbing them clean. The gang was found in possession of stolen cash of about UGX 30m according to sources in the investigation.
According to sources, the policemen have been staging fortuitous check points to stop their victims and gang members would appear from the bushes and surround the victim and threaten them with machetes and make away with their monies and valuables.
Charles Twiine, the CID spokesperson said that among the arrested 5 are 3 members of the Uganda Police Force in the ongoing investigations.
Twiine identified the suspects as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Denis Cheptoyek, acting officer-in-charge (OC) of Mityana Police Station Vincent Nyang, probation Police Constable Amos Isanga, a one Raphael Ssemaganda and an unidentified civilian.
However the Police is investigating the matter and hopes to apprehend other members of the outfit that may still be looming large. Police is yet to provide a detailed report on the matter.
