Minister of health Dr. Ruth Aceng has on Monday mid-night announced more 8 cases of Coronavirus disease in Uganda, bringing to a total of 9 victims in the country. The Minister while addressing the press at health ministry headquarters in Mulago said, out of the 8 new cases, 6 victims were intercepted at Entebbe airport from Dubai while 2 case are part of the team that had been quarantined. “The ministry conducted 35 test samples and 8 of them tested positive for COVID19,” stated Aceng.
Until Saturday 21, Uganda had remained the only country in the region with no case of Coronavirus. The first victim, also journalist traveled to Dubai on March 17th to carry on some business. Upon his return on March 21 through Entebbe International Airport, the 36-year old was found with high body temperature (38.6 degrees) and was later quarantined before his nasal samples were taken to the Uganda Virus Research Institute – UVRI for testing.
By Saturday 9.00 pm, UVRI had confirmed the victim’s sample, and later, Minister Aceng declared how the virus had jetted into the country. Meanwhile, samples of 6 Chinese nationals who were recently arrested in Zombo district, were also taken for testing. According to Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu the state Minister for primary health care, once the results are out, the Chines will be arraigned in court for escaping from quarantine.
Over 378,400 COVID19 cases have been registered world over, out of whom, 16,490 have succumbed. The Ugandan government have so far come up with preventive measures against the pandemic, among which public gatherings have all been suspended for at least 32days.
